The Mall

Here is a collage of life studies from the mall. Thursday after the zoo, I spent a little time at the mall and drew everyone I could catch as they walked by. Here are a few of the sketches that were a little more fun.

Thursday I spent the morning at the zoo trying to get coyote reference for a project I'm working on. I was able to do some drawing while I was there, and this is one of the images I thought came out good.

Felicity Ulrich Comic

Well, due to the unpopularity of the storyboard review blog it is now closed. Don't try to find it, it doesn't exist anymore. Instead I now have a new page that I am working on. It is an online comic called Felicity Ulrich. Hopefully it will help me develop some of the same skills I was trying to work on with the Storyboard Review. However it should be a lot more entertaining. I have included the first page both inked and colored. I am still working on learning color. I thought that the drawn and inked page turned out rather well (a lot better than the colored, and finished version), and I wanted to show it somewhere. Hopefully this comic will help me improve my color also. Anyways, the link to my online comic is:

Microsoft Engineering

I have another new storyboard up in my Storyboard Review section. It is a fun little skit that makes fun of Microsoft. You can review it, and some other storyboards I am working on at:

or just follow the link that is in the link section of this blog.

Life drawing

I haven't been able to get a decent figure drawing that I feel good about since that comment from Marcelo. However, I have been taking my anatomy study a lot more seriously. I have also been taking a new approach to my life drawing as far as what I am looking for in the figure. Even though I haven't been able to get a good figure drawing. I did have a knee and hand that turned out rather well and are closer to what I would like to achieve with the whole figure. I still need a lot more practice though.

Storyboard Review

Well, I have started a new blog. I am going to post storyboards and try to get feedback like I would when pitching a real storyboard. That way I can fix and adjust the storyboards and create some really good portfolio pieces. The new blog is:

Stop on by and give me some feedback. Thanks.

Thumbnails and a face

These are just some random thumbnail sketches that I have done as well as a face that I liked recently. Just more sketchbook stuff. Hopefully it is eyecandy for you too.

Storyboard Study

I figure that as long as I am putting up Storyboard studies that I would put up some from "Pirates of the Caribean". Another great movie and I am being inspired towards pirates again due to El-Pacifico. So here are just some more storyboard studies.

Storyboard Study

As I have been studying and pushing myself to understand storyboarding better, I have been also doing an exercise. I watch a movie that I enjoy and then I do small Pen and wash studies to try to understand the lighting and composition that they have used. It both allows me to study the camera angles, lighting, framing and everything else but it also allows me to get in some fun sketch practice. These are just some small studies from "Peter Pan" the movie that came out a couple of years ago. Well done little show. I have a few issues with some of the effects. Also Peter seems disjointed from the background occasionally when he is flying. But all in all some nice scenes and beautiful atmosphere.

Felicity Revisited

I am still exploring Felicity. Here are two more small variations. Even looking at children of the same age, their body shape and sizes vary dramatically. Even among my own nieces of similar age there is a foot or more in height difference. I guess size variations occur dramatically during the first growing phazes. Anyways, I am just playing with it still trying to decide on a taller Felicity, or a shorter and pudgier Felicity. I am also trying to work on the building blocks used to create her so that I will easily be able to manipulate them and still have Felicity look like she is in the proper proportions. Anyways, here are some more studies.

Felicity Revisited

After doing a lot more exploring with the character it is starting to get a lot closer to what I want the finished character to look like. The little pooch gut is sitting a little low on this drawing. I need to fix it as I keep working on felicity. But you get the idea. As soon as I get a final character look that I am happy with I will do a cleaned up version and add color. As well as maybe an expression sheet. I still have a few other characters I will need to create and work on but I want to get Felicity finished first and let the final look of Felicity set the style of the other characters.

Felicity Revisited

After doing some more sketching with the idea I did a little sketch to put Felicity into a setting to try and play with some ideas. Here is another one of the sketches that came out with this brain storming session. It isn't great. The composition and environment leave much to be desired. However it is getting ideas flowing and it is allowing me to get more comfortable and explore the character.

Felicity Revisited

Well, I have started a new project. I am using an old one though. In order to beef up my storyboard portfolio, I needed a story idea and some characters. After playing with a few different things. I started to just sketch because I was having a mental block. I came up with this little sketch and was reminded of a story idea that I was working on in college. So, I decided to play with the character some more and work on coming up with a more concrete character design than the one I had in college. Then I will redo some of the story and rework the settings. After that I hope to be able to sit down and do some really nice storyboards. Anyways, here is the sketch that got my creativity going again. Felicity Ulrich Revisited.

Just another face

Just another face that came up while I was sketching other stuff.

Astronaut and face

Just a random sketch out of my Sketchbook. After drawing it, I think I've seen a picture with an astronaut girl that looks like this somewhere before. I can't be certain though. But I liked these little sketches so I thought I would post them.

Life drawing

Here are some more life drawings. Unfortunately for the next two weeks I can only go to the tuesday sessions. The saturday ones aren't going on because of some spring break thing these college kids get. Lazy bums. They should stay and spend the week drawing:). Anyways all joking aside I'm gonna miss the extra practice. It is amazing to see how quickly my drawing has come back since I started figure drawing again. Even just in the few weeks I have been doing it. The first night I was drawing I didn't even come out with one piece I would ever want anyone to see. However, since then I am almost back to were I was when I stopped life drawing. Now that I am almost caught up I am excited to start improving again.

I have a problem though. For those who do life drawings and post, how do you get the image into your computer without losing the information? I have a normal size scanner and so I can't scan anything as large as a life drawing. My solution is to just take a digital photograph and put it in the computer. But the lines get a little more harsh than they really are. Or else the lines dissapear completely. I do some touch up in photoshop to get it back to what it kind of was in the original. However, it still doesn't look as good as the originals. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

Just a fun face that came out amidst a bunch of dogs during the life drawing.

Life drawing

Here are some more. After starting this Tuesday drawing session I found out about another one on Saturday. So, now I get to go twice a week. I have to go an hour and a half out of my way for each of them. But I get to draw twice a week. I'm sure that eventually it will pay off.

Life drawing

Here are two life drawings from last night. Still not the best, but I am out of practice. I will post more later but I thought I should at least post something. I am also having fun with some new grease pencils I found. I am trying to get the hang of doing decent shading with them. All in all I'm having fun though.

Studies from a master

Long time no write. I have been busy with the gallery again, but I am still working on art. I have recently found a life drawing group so I am getting back into the once a week life drawing sessions. After the first one I realized how out of practice I was. So, I started studying some "old masters" sketches. Actually the master isn't that old. But has some beautiful drawings to study. One of them is a study I did of a figure drawing that Marcelo has on his site right now. I don't claim any credit for the design work on it at all. It is all his. But I wanted to post what I have been up to. I have been told a lot of times that the best way to study art is to copy it. Copy what you like until it becomes yours. Anyways, as I was going through other life drawings that I enjoyed and was studying and drawing them I came across another figure sketch by Marcelo. It was a study he had done from a Masamune Shirow figure that he did to explain the anatomy to me. So it is a study of a study. Fun way to learn. Anyways, these are just two studies of master drawings. I think even people in the top of the industry still study the work of other artists. If you want to see the original thing. He has a blog at Good stuff. Incidentally these are both signed N.M. I used to have a hangup about doing sketches of other peoples work and having someone look through my sketchbook and think they were mine. My solution to that issue was to start signing my studies as N.M. (not mine). Doesn't really matter, but this is a blog so I can share whatever random thoughts come to mind.
