These are shorter poses than I've been doing. However, I am having trouble just throwing in a gesture line. I want to tweak it from the start and break it up into shapes. I used to get around it by throwing in some 10 second gesture drawings in order to get just the main gesture line and layout before I did anything else. Now that I have written it, I am gonna start doing that again before the other drawings in order to get warmed up. I've also noticed that it is harder to do gesture drawings from photos. I have a flattened image that I start to pick out the shapes an shadows on rather than seeing the main shape and motion. With a live model it seems easier because I can see the gesture as the model gets in position and it goes onto my paper more simply. There is probably a good explanation for this. If you have any thoughts, let me know.

Hello. I didn't post on Saturday. I stayed on the couch all day trying to get over the cold that moved into my lungs. I didn't get up for much. I'm still sick, but I need practice, so I got some drawings done. Here is another really quick gesture drawing.

I've noticed that when I'm sick my drawings get worse. My concentration goes down, and it takes me longer to do things. I also don't do them as well. Anyways, I still sound like a toad today and my drawings aren't very good. Tell-tale signs of a cold. I'm hoping that by tommorow I will be doing much better. We'll see tommorow.

I've got a stupid cold and it seems to make everything suck right now. Even drawing. But a goal is a goal. Here is one of the pages of quick ones today. Hopefully I will feel better and do well tommorow. mmmm... Chicken soup and sleep. Yeah, I should do better after I rest some more.

Don't you hate it when you can't come up with a title for a blog post. Anyways, here is one for today. Still working on gesture drawings. I am going to keep it up for awhile until I can start getting my proportions and poses more correct again. Then I will proceed to relearn anatomy, shading, etc...

My wife thinks that the baby is going to be here in the next day or two, so I may have another reason that I won't be able to post. However, for now here is a post. I did a bunch of quick gesture drawings. This was one of the quick lay in's. It was less than 45 seconds. Have fun and I will post again tommorow (unless I'm in the hospital).

I used to like erasers. I had a friend tell me that if I want my line quality to improve that I should just use ball point pens for a while and it would force me to improve. So, if you notice some obvious flaws with my lines (or multiple lines) that is why. I don't erase. I am trying to force myself to get it right the first time. Tomorrow is the Sabbath and so I won't be drawing. Sundays are strictly church and family for me. However, I will get more drawing done on Monday. Bye.

It's only the fourth day and I am already having trouble keeping my goals. After a long day of work I headed out on a date with my wife and now that I am back I just wanted to relax and sleep. However, for the sake of keeping up this goal I did a bunch of quick gesture drawings. This is a 45 second drawing out of the bunch. If I can keep it up I will improve. See ya. Same place same goal tommorow.

I didn't have a model today, so I just used some old reference photo's from college. (I don't even remember where I got most of these) However, I decided to post two pictures. A few 45 second sketches and a five minute. My line work is terrible. My hands are having trouble remembering what they are supposed to do. So, I need to get back into the practice of getting a line right the first time rather than using 20 short wiggles to define the leg.

Here are the drawings for January 2nd. I decided to post three because I really haven't posted in a long time. I had two models today (A certain to be rare event.) I only had each for a half hour though. I am working on getting a regular life drawing studio set up. But for now, I take what I can get. One was draped and the other undraped. Here are some more life drawings. I did a lot of 45 second gesture drawings and a few short sketches. One of these is a two minute drawing. The other two are three minute drawings.
It's been a really long time since I posted last. So long in fact, I wonder if anyone even checks this anymore. I have just been busy with work and my blog fell in priority. However, I made a news years goal that I am going to try to keep. I am going to do life drawing every day. (I may not post everyday) but Monday through Saturday I will do life drawing everyday for a whole year. You will have to bear with me on the quality. It has been a very long time since I have done any serious life drawing. Most days I won't have a model to work from, but I will have anatomy books, pictures, and any other reference I can find. I was going to delete all my old posts and start this blog from scratch so you can watch my progression over the next year. However, I will leave on the old posts for now. Here's one of the drawings I did yesterday. Like I said don't judge it just yet. I am out of practice. Look at this as a starting point for my improvement over the next year. So, this is my drawing for 1-1-2008. This was a two minute sketch. I didn't have a model yesterday so I just pulled out some of my old college reference pictures and did a bunch of short sketches. This was one of them. Suffer for now, but I hope you will start enjoying before to long.
