IPhone Sketches

Here are three more. These were done on the IPhone with the Zen Brush app. I really enjoy the simplicity of it. You simply deal with size, and brush type. There are only three shades, plus an eraser. However, there are a couple of downsides. The undo command can only undo a single stroke. Also, you can't zoom in and out, which makes drawing on such a tiny screen difficult. What you see is what you get.

I did get a stylus though. Because the stylus for the IPhone has to replicate a finger touch, it is bulky and still isn't very accurate. However, it does help.

I am still enjoying the convenience of drawing on the IPhone. I still need to take the time to do a few color pieces though. We will see what I can get to.

For the sake of getting something I could use to test for mobile development, I finally upgraded my electronic leash and now have an IPhone (grumble, grumble). On the bright side, it does have some interesting drawing and painting apps that I have been playing with. There are five that I have been using. They are Brushes, Zen Brush, SketchBook, Adobe Ideas, and Sketch Club. Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. However, they are all kind of nice. Here is a little image I did playing around with the Brushes app. I am also including a video (It has a built in recorder). Forgive the poor accuracy of my line work. It is hard to finger paint pencil lines. I did just pick up a stylus though, and am experimenting with that. I am looking forward to getting back to painting as well.

Spring Semester Ecorche

Hello everyone. I haven't posted in a while again. (Seems to be the traditional introduction on this blog now.) Anyway, during the spring I was taking an Ecorche course for my MFA program. The concept is that you can learn anatomy by building the human figure from the inside out. Like a reverse dissection. Rather than cut in from the outside, you build it up. So, over the course of fifteen weeks, I modeled a half scale model of the human figure. I started out with building an armature and modeling the skeleton. Then I layered up the musculature from the deep muscles to the surface ones. I definitely learned a lot. I realize that some of my anatomy is off, but overall, it was a great experience. Anyway, since I haven't had many other projects I can show yet, I thought I would post this to show the end result of the ecorche course.

Anyway, I have been busy with trying to get a lot of non-art related projects completed (I will post about them when they are done). In addition to that, I am still preparing a lot of content for my classes. So, I have been creating a lot of art, but it is all for demonstration purposes. Nothing finished to show. Hello. In addition to everything else that I do, I also have done photography for a long time. I am weird that way. I will be looking out a window and see something that will make me run for the camera and outside. I have hundreds of pictures of sunsets. Along with pretty much everything else. I don't do photography as a living, but I realized that I never show any of my photos. So, for kicks, I decided to finally post a few. They are just some from the latest batch of downloads from the camera. Sorry about the watermarks, but they are kind of necessary in this day and age. I am probably going to start putting them on everything I post from now on. Hope you enjoy the pictures anyway. I have thousands of pictures on my external hard drive that I need to go through at some point. I take somewhere around 300 to 400 a month. Thank goodness for digital. Speaking of which. I don't own an SLR. I keep wanting to get one, but these are all taken with a cheap point and click. Unfortunately, it is all I could ever afford. However, I feel like I have been able to do alright despite the hardware setback. I have figured out how to change the settings and actually adjust the depth of field and lighting despite the fact that the camera tries to lock me out of those options. So, I can almost get it to look like an SLR. Works alright until the day I finally save up for something better. Anyway, that's enough typing. Enjoy.

Sketching Around Campus

It's been way too long again. I have been sketching around campus though, and figured that I should grab a few drawings from my sketchbook to put up. I just scanned and compiled them in photoshop. Not much, but at least I'm finally getting around to posting something new. Enjoy.

Here's the final pass. Yet again, prismacolor on vellum. I was going to post it with a canvas texture and some tone to it, but decided to post it in it's original state so that it wouldn't hide the flaws. I realize there are many. But, as I am not a concept artist, oh well. Don't worry though, I will eventually improve.

Creature Model

Alright, now onto the model. From the concept, I built the base mesh in Maya and unwrapped the UV's. I then did the texturing and detailing in ZBrush. I included an image of the texture and normal map that I exported out after the ZBrush process, but haven't felt a need to apply it to the maya model for any particular purpose yet. If you look back at the snail model I worked on, you can see how it could be applied back and then put into a game engine. I was just showing it for fun. Anyway, enjoy. I will try to post more, but we will see. I am still sporadic at this. However, I hope that at least someone will find this creature model interesting.

Creature Concept

Hello all. Told you I would post some modeling work. This is another creature I was working on. First off, I don't even pretend to be a concept artist. There are many that are much better and more skilled at it. However, I wanted to include the whole process. So, it starts as sketches, moves on to a few renditions(I know the facial muscles were screwed up, but I fixed them in the modeling process), finally I got a colored concept after going through a few ideas. Here is what I came up with.

Just thought I would post this to have something to post. It's just a creature I made for a class assignment. I will also be doing a musculature study of this, as well as a finished drawing. If they turn out decent, I will post them. If not, they will disappear, never to be seen again. This one was done with black prismacolor on vellum. I then took a photo of it and pulled it into photoshop. In photoshop, I just gave it a canvas texture, and added a brown overlay to make it look more interesting. Enjoy.

Finally getting close to the end of another semester in my MFA program. One of my classes was anatomy again. So, I have tons and tons of anatomy studies, figure drawings, master studies, and the like. Just for fun I thought I would post a few. Because Marcelo had spiced up one of his figure drawings by putting a parchment texture in the background, I figured I would do the same thing. It's nice. However, it still doesn't cover my poor drawing skills. I'll just have to work harder. But, I have a few 3D models that I may post as process pieces in the next couple of weeks. Also, I am going to try to post some more sketches. We'll see if I can keep up on my blog this time.

Back to Basics

I realize that no one is following my blog anymore, but I thought that I might start posting again. I have been so busy that it has honestly not been a priority. I am now an instructor at a university. As something to help my students, I am requiring them to keep sketchbooks. So, I started to get more serious about mine. It has never been a strong point for me. My technical abilities, and being able to create clean geometry for games has been my saving grace. As far as concept art and drawing skills... not so much. However, I thought I would start posting again anyway. If anyone sees this, then I hope you will at least enjoy it a little. If no one does, then this is just for my benefit. And for right now, that is good enough. I am still progressing in my art, even if it isn't as noticeable as I would like. I took a scan of one of my sketch pages and pulled this part out. I added a quick color pass. I may post a few full sketch pages. They aren't anything special, but at least I am still trying. I will probably post some of my 3D work in the next few weeks if I remember.

Traditional Sculpture

I haven't ever sculpted anything in clay before and so this has been a new experience for me. Anyway, here is a torso I finished last week. QuickSculpt Torso

Here's the quicksculpt for the day. I was going to post it earlier, but I had to run the wife to the hospital. Anyway, here it is. I know there are anatomical problems, specifically in the shoulders. Working on this, I realize that I really need to study my anatomy once more. I have forgotten a lot. I didn't have time to fix it before I had to leave.

Also, I am trying to stop the sculpts and not let them go long. So, even though I wanted to take the time to find reference and correct the muscles, I cut it off at an hour and a half. I will come back later and fix it when I have time.

The reason I did a torso is because I start my MFA in two weeks. As I was looking at the modules for my sculpting class, I noticed a torso that I will have to make. So, I decided to do this one for now. The video is below.

QuickSculpt Fat Man

I guess to be politically correct, I should say morbidly obese, big boned, or water retentive. Anyway, after the old man, I thought about going fat. After struggling with it once more, I think I need to start using some sort of a reference for these sculpts. If I do fantasy monsters or something I can fake it, but with these realistic subjects I really need to get my stuff straight. Below is the link to the process video.

QuickSculpt Old Man

I had many troubles with today's quicksculpt. I was struggling with being tired and unfocused. So, there was a lot of back and forth on what I was doing. If I had a clearer head, I could probably have done it quicker. I even had to restructure the skeletal bridge around the eye socket, as well as redoing the ears near the end. I can't believe I didn't notice those until so far into the sculpt. Anyway, it ended up working out alright. Below is the link to the process video.

Because I was unfocused today, I went long. I took almost two hours to do this quicksculpt. The video is 22 minutes, and the file is 788 meg. Like I wrote in a previous post, it is easiest to right click the link and select "Download Linked File", or "Save Target As" depending on which web browser you are using. There is no sound on any of these videos. So, to make the watching easier, just put on some music to help make it more fun. You can even select what you want the songs to be. Anyway, enjoy.

QuickSculpt Toad

Today's quicksculpt was a toad. I had some problems with it because I was modeling from a sphere. But it turned out pretty well. Here's the link to the video of the process.

It is 577 meg. But it only runs 17 minutes. The reason for this is because I was losing a lot of detail with the video compression. This video is much more clear than the previous two. Also, I know it is a pain to wait for the video to load up on the internet and it is difficult to tell if it has frozen or not. So, a way to make this easier is to right click the link above and select "Download linked file". Hopefully that will make it easier for you. QuickSculpt Kappa

For today, I did my variation of a kappa. A kappa is a japanese water demon. Sometimes shown with a turtle's beak, or with puckered lips. Sometimes shown with black hair, bald, or wearing a leaf for a hat. Sometimes with slits for ears, elven ears, or human ears. There are a lot of variations. This took me about an hour and a half to do the modeling and the texturing. I have included the link to another video to show the process.

QuickSculpt Dragonhead

Here's my quicksculpt for the day. I didn't get one done yesterday. I am working on a female base 3D mesh, and it is taking a lot of time. I will post on that project as I get further along. With the dragon today, I started with just having fun sculpting and ended up with the untextured model. I then added the detailed modeling, and a simple texture pass. I included both because I almost like the untextured and stylistic model better than the finished one. It was fun. I would like to approach this once more and adjust the horns to wrap down by the head like a goat, but this is what I did very quickly today. I will post another one if I get a chance tomorrow.

Today I just did a quick sculpt. Basically, it is like sketching in 3D. I start with nothing, and let my imagination take off. In ZBrush, they have something called Zspheres. I can quickly create a form using the spheres, and then convert it into something I can sculpt. Just for practice with sculpting, I think I will be doing a lot of these quick sculpts. Because I am not doing them for any sort of specific project, they aren't getting a color pass. For this one, I just stuck a Pewter material attribute on it. Enjoy, I will post more as I get to it.

I'm done with the snail

I'm finally done with the snail. For real this time. I want to move on to another project. I just couldn't let this one go until I finished a few more things. Along with fixing the wood texture, I wanted to show how this model and process could actually be used in video game creation.

The first picture is the completed model in ZBrush. The second picture shows how the normal and texture map transferred onto the model in Maya. The final picture shows the snail in an actual game engine. I put the low resolution Maya version of the model into the Unreal 3 editor. I then imported the textures and normal maps. A few duplications and light placements later, and we have a group of snails in a video game engine at a low resolution that doesn't look half bad.

So, there you go. Hope you enjoyed this little excursion into the world of 3D content creation with the snail. If you have any question, just let me know. I am happy to explain the process and answer any questions. The lack of easily accessible knowledge in some of these areas has been an extreme frustration to me in the past. So, I want to help others get any information they need without going through some of the pains that I have had to.

I will try and post a new project when I get a chance. I will be starting something tomorrow. I just haven't decided what yet. Have fun.

Final Snail

Here's the final snail. I gave it a stand and modeled it to look like a little statue in order to give it a more finished feeling. I like how the bronze work turned out. I may come back and do some adjustment to the bottom part of the stand though. It isn't reading as plastic the way I want it to. If I get time, I need to come back and give it an actual wood grain modeling and texturing pass and turn it into a straight wooden base. Anyway, I also adjusted the shell to give it more vibrant colors. I took the yellows that are in a natural snail shell, and adjusted them to be not only more vibrant, but to also shift into some purple and greens. I thought that this would add to the statue appearance. I just wanted a nice finished product after all the hard work.

The main goal of this was to learn some new skills with Zbrush, and to brush up on my old modeling skills. It isn't totally hyper realistic like I had hoped though. I was able to pull off a bit of a subdermal appearance in the skin. However, I couldn't get a decent translucency. It is totally opaque. I have yet to find anyone that has been able to pull off translucency in Zbrush, or any kind of alpha blending for that matter. If anyone reading this has been able to, please let me know how. I am very eager to learn.

Anyway, we will be celebrating the 24th of July out of town. So, I will start a new project on Monday. I will post as I get around to it. For now, enjoy the snail statue.

Textured

Sorry it's been so long. Life is getting in the way of my art right now. However, here is the textured version. The first four are screenshots from zbrush. The final one is in maya after I have transfered all of the textures and normal maps to the low resolution model. I need to do some more work on it. I will post an update when I get some time.

Normal and Occlusion map

Apparently I have a lot to post today. Using the high resolution model in Zbrush, I created normal maps (the bluish one) and occlusion maps (the black and white ones). These give the low poly model the illusion of having more detail and sculpting than would be possible with a normal flat texture. I will be creating the texture on the high resolution model, and then will transfer that to the low poly model so that the low poly model will have the illusion of having much more detail. (That is how they get the illusion of having detailed environments and characters in games without breaking your game systems).

I will post updates as I get them. I still have a lot to learn about the matcap system in Zbrush though, and am progressing as fast as I can find information and answers to my questions.

Zbrush Pass

Here's the high resolution pass I did in Zbrush. I can now transfer this information to the low resolution model through using a normal map. As I get time, I will post the transfered normal maps. I will also be starting on the texture. I need to run through more tutorials and I am also trying to figure out how to pull of a really good translucency to my textures in maya.

Anyway, I'll post more as I get time and make progress.

Updated Mesh and UV map

Sorry I haven't posted for a bit. I was busy running through some tutorials yesterday. I still have a lot I am trying to teach myself. Anyway, After some more studying of my snail reference, I decided to redo the mesh and make some adjustments. The front portion of the snail has more of a bulge. It doesn't extend to the back. It is like a large muscle that comes out of the shell and works to the front. I wanted to get it right. So, here is the new mesh.

I also updated the UV map. Although I could get away with the seam running down the middle of the shell, I decided to just unwrap the shell in case I decide to make some adjustments in Photoshop. I am still trying to learn how to use the matcap painting system in Zbrush. I also decided to do two UV maps. One for the body portion, the other for the shell portion.

So, enjoy. In a little bit, I will post the work I did in Zbrush today.

UV Map

Just finished the UV map. It took me awhile to get around to it today because I had to go deal with inspection and registration for my vehicle this morning. But, here is the tweaked snail, with it's UV map. I split the shell because I will be doing the texture work in Zbrush rather than Photoshop. So, there shouldn't be a seam. However, if there are any issues I will have to redo the UV map and try a different approach to the shell. It will take longer, but will look better if I can't pull it off in the first pass.

I am going to do a quick test to see if it will work. If I have to redo it, I will try to post the new UV map this evening.

Snail Mesh

Two posts in one day. It's been awhile since I've done that. Well, I have the basic mesh modeled. Here are some screencaps of it. I will do some tweaking and cleanup tomorrow. I will also be doing the UV mapping.

For those who are unfamiliar, UV mapping is when I tell the model how the texture needs to be applied onto the surface. If I remember, I will take some screencaps of the final UV map and show how it works. For now, here is an extremely basic model. The shell was a little tough to get right, but It worked out well enough. Like I said, I will tweak it tomorrow when I have some fresh eyes to look at it with.

Snails

Hey all,

Now that my website is updated, and my focus has shifted from trying to get a company going and back to artwork, I am starting some new art projects. So, just to get into the swing of things, I am going to model a snail. Seems kinda simple. And, the basic geometry actually is. However, I am also taking this opportunity to get back into the habit, as well as learning new things. Even though it seems simple on the surface, I will be trying to model it in a realistic way. I will also be experimenting to get the translucency and skin correct, as well as the shell.

The reason I am doing a snail was because all the rainstorms recently have brought out a slew of snails. I found no less than 14 at a time on my tomato plants. That doesn't include the dozens of others throughout the garden, as well as the thirty more in the front rose bushes. (That was just on one of the rainy days. We have had other days with even more snails.) Anyway, as I picked up one of them to toss it into the neighboring lot, I got to noticing the neat texturing, (I know, it's an artist thing). So, I got over thirty high resolution pictures of it and am setting to work recreating the texturing of the snail. I thought it would be a good warm up for the more difficult modeling projects that I want to do over the next few months (barring actually finding a job).

I will post updates as I work on it, and try to explain my process. For now, here are some low resolution versions of four of the pictures I took. Enjoy.

Fathers and Sons Campout

Hello all,

Sorry I haven't written in a while again. I am going with my son and my father out to a fathers and sons campout tonight. So, in honor of that, I am going to post a poem I wrote at the beginning of the year. (I need to start posting more of these.) Here it is.

came without peep.
Right past my wife
who had put him to sleep.

He snuck past the doorway
and past the t.v.
He came round the bedpost
and crawled in with me.

He snuggled up close
as his mother returned.
He knew it was bedtime.
That lesson he'd learned.

He sought out protection
and so turned to pop.
He wanted to stay up
and momma to stop.

As I lay laughing
his mother sat down.
But quickly I stopped
as she stared with a frown.

And as I was rising,
my son sounded sad.
Mommy please help me.
Protect me from dad.

him back to his room.

Unreal Level

Hello all. I haven't posted in awhile again. I have been busy (everyone says that). Anyway, here are some screencaps of a work in progress. I am building a level from scratch and getting it working in the Unreal Engine. These are some images of the whitebox. I should have the rest of the whitebox finished by tomorrow so that it will be fully playable. After that, I will be coming back and doing a first pass on all the art. Then later, a polish pass. I will put up some updated picks as I get around to it. If anyone has any questions on the art creation process, I will be happy to share.

Stephan Frost is a designer and so between the two of us we are going to make a fully functional FPS level that will have the added fun of having tons of environment damage (this means that you don't just shoot people, you use the environment against them). We will be keeping track of our process so that people that are unfamiliar with how you actually make games will be able to get a glimpse of the process. He will post the design process, and I will post the art process. As this is a side project, it won't go as fast as it normally would. However, we will post as we go, and I hope you will enjoy following along. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us.

A blustery day

It's been a wonderful warm and blustery day. I even rode my motorcycle to work and back. The weather is making me want to spend more time outside. Anyway, here is another poem that I wrote at the beginning of the year. I hope you enjoy it. Beware, it has a very Dr. Seuss feel to it.

Zbrush 45 minutes

I finally got a copy of Zbrush last week. I started learning how to use it over the weekend and have been running through tutorials. I'm still new to the software, but am getting the hang of it. I modeled this out tonight as a test. I started by using a sphere primitive. It took 45 minutes to do the modeling. I hope to get quicker and better, but this is a start. Hope you enjoy the goblin.

The prodigal blogger

Hello all. I've been out of my head for a long time. I thought about getting rid of this blog over and over all year. However, I am glad that I didn't. I had a good friend write a letter to me that helped me out. So, I am going to start posting again. I won't be faithful and do it everyday or anything. But it can't be worse than I've done over the last year.

I have gone in a different direction at work. I am not seeking to be a concept artist, or a figurative artist. So, filling a sketchbook hasn't been at the top of my priorities. I also have wonderful children that make it not seem so vital at home. However, for my personal sanity, I am going to be sketching more. I will even start posting sketches again (which was kind of the point of this blog in the first place.) It won't be the best, but I don't care. It is something I want to do. "Sketch Practice" is also going to become more of a metaphoric title for my blog. Sure I will put actual sketches in, but it will also be a place to put all my thoughts and other items of interest in my life. I am going to start using it as an outlet. Sort of a cathodic way to keep contact with the world. So, as a start I am going to put in a poem tonight. I have been using poetry as an outlet also. I've made it a goal to write a poem at night before I go to sleep. This is one of them from the beginning of the month. I'm not a professional. However, yet again, I don't care. This is for me and my sanity. If you don't like it, tough cookies. If you enjoy it, great. I don't bother putting on titles. So don't look for one.

These are shorter poses than I've been doing. However, I am having trouble just throwing in a gesture line. I want to tweak it from the start and break it up into shapes. I used to get around it by throwing in some 10 second gesture drawings in order to get just the main gesture line and layout before I did anything else. Now that I have written it, I am gonna start doing that again before the other drawings in order to get warmed up. I've also noticed that it is harder to do gesture drawings from photos. I have a flattened image that I start to pick out the shapes an shadows on rather than seeing the main shape and motion. With a live model it seems easier because I can see the gesture as the model gets in position and it goes onto my paper more simply. There is probably a good explanation for this. If you have any thoughts, let me know.

I used to like erasers. I had a friend tell me that if I want my line quality to improve that I should just use ball point pens for a while and it would force me to improve. So, if you notice some obvious flaws with my lines (or multiple lines) that is why. I don't erase. I am trying to force myself to get it right the first time. Tomorrow is the Sabbath and so I won't be drawing. Sundays are strictly church and family for me. However, I will get more drawing done on Monday. Bye.

I didn't have a model today, so I just used some old reference photo's from college. (I don't even remember where I got most of these) However, I decided to post two pictures. A few 45 second sketches and a five minute. My line work is terrible. My hands are having trouble remembering what they are supposed to do. So, I need to get back into the practice of getting a line right the first time rather than using 20 short wiggles to define the leg.

Hey everyone,

It's been a really long time since I posted last. So long in fact, I wonder if anyone even checks this anymore. I have just been busy with work and my blog fell in priority. However, I made a news years goal that I am going to try to keep. I am going to do life drawing every day. (I may not post everyday) but Monday through Saturday I will do life drawing everyday for a whole year. You will have to bear with me on the quality. It has been a very long time since I have done any serious life drawing. Most days I won't have a model to work from, but I will have anatomy books, pictures, and any other reference I can find. I was going to delete all my old posts and start this blog from scratch so you can watch my progression over the next year. However, I will leave on the old posts for now. Here's one of the drawings I did yesterday. Like I said don't judge it just yet. I am out of practice. Look at this as a starting point for my improvement over the next year. So, this is my drawing for 1-1-2008. This was a two minute sketch. I didn't have a model yesterday so I just pulled out some of my old college reference pictures and did a bunch of short sketches. This was one of them. Suffer for now, but I hope you will start enjoying before to long.

Unfortunately I have been unable to come up with a final squirrel character yet. I have gone through page after page of sketches and explorations but am dissatisfied. This is the most recent rendition, but I am going to keep pushing it and trying different things until I come up with something I am happy with. (Especially since I will be modeling, rigging, and animating this and so will have to deal with it for a very long time.) I need to make sure I really like the design I end up with. Hello again. As I said in my last post about figure drawing, the studio's have started up again. I realized that I never post my quick gesture drawings. Yaaaay!!! My life drawing groups have started back up again. It's been a few months (as you can tell by my drawing). But after a few weeks of getting back in shape I should start posting my figure drawings regularly again (I will probably still post some of these half-baked ones until then though). I do have a problem I was hoping for advice on. I still keep rendering rather than designing my figures. I am struggling with it. Does anyone have any practices or advice on how to better design the figure, rather than just copy what I see? I have been trying to break from one to the other for a long time now. I have better success sometimes than others, but if you have any advice on this please let me know.

Sorry I haven't posted in so long. My life has gotten kind of hectic again. I have been busy at the gallery, applying for work, and my evenings have become even more fun because my three month old son now has all of his upper teeth coming in at the same time as well as a few of his bottom teeth. Needless to say I'm being kept busy. I wasn't expecting the teething so soon, or in such quantity. I just hope it goes quickly so he will be happy again. Anyways, here is what I have finished with the Asian Chef. I still need to do the other 5 characters. I also need to scan and post some sketches. That was the original purpose of this blog was to be an online sketchbook. However, it seems to have become a page dedicated to all my work in progress. Since these college kids are coming back the evening life drawing should be starting up again, so I hope to be posting some more life drawing in the next few weeks. Enjoy this character in the meantime though.

I haven't posted in awhile. I was planning on working more on my chibi characters. However a phone call with a prospective employer changed that. Last monday I talked to them and they said that they wanted to see if I had an aptitude for doing construction (for a possible level design position). So I needed to build a 3-D building. I had tuesday, wednesday, and thursday to design and build it from start to finish. I needed to bring it in on Friday. So, here is what I came up with. A library with attached residence for the caretaker. I also wanted to give it an observation deck. Here are a few images of what I ended with. However, if you want to see more, I have 23 images posted in my 3-D portfolio on my website. You can either follow the link or go to www.bawdenstudio.com. It was kind of difficult because I hadn't really done much level design on the computer. I have focused on the character design. I also had work at the Museum which cut back my time some. However, this is the best I could do with the time given, and am pretty happy with what I was able to do in that time. (It took me most of the weekend to recover from the lack of sleep). I have a lot of construction experience and that helped, so though it is small it would be totally functional in real life. (the apartment is actually the same size as some Japanese apartments I've been in). I am still planning on finishing the chibi characters and fixing the female model. However it will be put on hold again for a few days. Real life bills are forcing me to do a few extra jobs right now. I spent friday and saturday painting signs, and am back at the Museum working on display cases today. However, I am still working on them so look forward to it.

Modeled Chef

Here is the modeled Asian Chef. It took me about 7 hours to model it all and work out the bugs when I turned it into a higher poly count. The low poly count is 1489 tri poly's with 492 of those poly's in the head. It could be reduced to 1000 tri poly's very easily it would just make him a little more blocky. The Smooth version has just under 3500 tri poly's.
I have been working on the uv mapping and texturing. However, I am running into problems that I have never experienced before. So some advice would be helpful. The UV mapping is the same as ever. I had the head mapped out in a half hour to an hour. However I then spent the next few hours working on the stupid texture. Until now I just created a texture and was able to put it on. I would also occasionaly add a bump map to the surface to create variety. What I am trying for now is a very flat, cell shading. Similar to a lot of 3-D cartoons that are coming out now and also similar to a lot of video game characters. Specifically the Gamecube genre where they have to work with less detail. I wanted to try it to see if I could. Anyways, the problem that is coming up is that when I put the texture on, it makes the model look like one of those cheap dollar store ceramic figurines. It doesn't look like the character I was envisioning. I have tried adding slight gradation to the flat color (a.k.a. some slight shading in the ear, and below the eyebrow and nose. etc...) However, then it clashes with the rest. Has anyone ever experienced this dilemma? Cell shading 3-D is new for me and is actually more difficult to do correctly than I expected. I can just shade it, but I want it to actually look good. So, I am going to finish mapping the rest of the UV's, finish doing the best cell shade that I can do, then I will post what I have ended up with. Any feedback before then would be appreciated. However, I will try to get it posted as soon as possible in order to get more direct feedback. Thanks.

Here it is. All done. I touched up the head too. I wish I had an actual version of maya so I could render a picture at a higher quality. I put a lot of effort into getting the muscles and bones right so they would show properly. Especially in the neck and shoulder. Anyways, here it is.

The Museum/Gallery finally got it's grant money in, and I need to pay the bills. So, I will be working a lot more and won't be posting as often on here. I will still be working on projects, but my time will be significantly reduced for a while. I will be posting more 3-D work, and hopefully working on some storyboards as well as maybe a comic page addition. We will see what happens. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

Now I need to attach the arm and work out the whole shoulder assembly, as well as the rest of the back and neck. Then I will touch up problems in the face and post a finished image. Here is an update. I have been working on the female 3-D model today. I still need to finish the bottom of the leg and foot. As well as the arm. Once I complete the arm I will be able to finish the shoulder, clavicle, neck, and shoulderblade assembly. Then I will do some touchups on the head and anywhere else that needs it. I am still hoping to have it done by saturday. If not, I will try to get it done by the first of the week. I put up both a low polycount rotation. As well as the smoothed version. Any feedback or advice is appreciated. Yes I know it's not done yet. But help along the way is nice. Thanks.

3-D female head

Well, Rick Schmitz suggested that I do a generic female and male model in maya in order to beef up my video game portfolio. I haven't had much time due to the 4th. However I did a head today as the start to my female model. I thought I would post it with some questions for you guys (and gals) that are currently in the industry. The top rotation is a low polygon count head. The bottom is just smoothed to a higher poly count. I know that the poly count used to be a big issue in the game industry. Something like 500 poly count on a head, and 500 on the body. Is it even an issue still? Especially with the new systems? Or can I do a model that is a really high poly count and not worry about it? I am trying to keep it at a reasonably low count with these, but I did do the quick smooth so that you could see it without the blocky feel. Also, I keep being told that I need to specialize. That I should just do modeling, or texturing, or rigging, etc.... Is that still true, or is there some crossover? A.k.a. I model, texture and rig my own character? How specialized or generic does the work become? I'm just curious so that if it really is a specialization issue, I can focus on one area more than another. Also (last question) do any companies use nurbs, or is it all polygons still? Nurbs look so much nicer with less effort.

I will try to finish this female model this week and do the male model next week. I will post and ask for feedback. I am also working on some more storyboards for my storyboard portfolio. I will try and post some of that for feedback too. Thanks everyone.
